Hindi pa nag-iinit sa kanyang mga kamay ang parangal mula sa San Beda University, gusto nang bawiin ng alumni kay Quezon City Rep. Jesus “Bong” Suntay ang Distinguished Alumnus award na iginawad sa kanya noong nakaraang Linggo.
Ayon sa ulat ng Kodao Productions, ang panawagan ay bunsod ng “lewd” remarks ni Suntay sa isang congressional hearing na hayagan niyang ikinuwento ang kanyang sexual fantasies tungkol sa aktres-host na si Anne Curtis.
Sa isang online petition (https://c.org/BjYTfqdLbD c.org) na kumalat sa alumni group chats, sinabi ng mga Bedan na ang mga pahayag ni Suntay ay “diametrically opposed” sa moral values ng paaralan.
“The basis for this call stems from Mr. Suntay’s recent conduct during a Congressional hearing, where he issued a deeply misogynistic and derogatory statement directed at a female public personality,” nakasaad sa petisyon.
“Such language is not only an affront to the dignity of women but serves to degrade the very institution of the House of Representatives (HOR),” giit sa petisyon.
Ginawa ni Suntay ang remarks sa deliberasyon ng House Committee on Justice kaugnay ng ikatlong impeachment complaint laban kay Vice President Sara Duterte.
Sa kanyang pagtatanggol kay Duterte, ikinuwento ni Suntay ang kanyang “unspoken sexual desires” nang makita si Curtis sa isang mall sa Maynila, na kanyang inihalintulad sa banta ni Duterte na patayin sina Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, at dating Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.
Hindi nagustuhan ng mga kapwa Bedan ang kanyang mga pahayag at ang mga sumunod na pagtatangkang ipagtanggol ang sarili sa media interviews.
“A Bedan award is not merely a recognition of professional success; it is a testament to an individual’s embodiment of the Benedictine hallmarks of community, stewardship, and respect,” paliwanag ng petisyon.
Dagdag pa:“Revoking this award is not an act of malice but an act of institutional integrity. It is a necessary step to reaffirm that San Beda University remains a sanctuary of respect and a molder of men and women who lead with heart, not with vitriol.”
Ginawaran si Suntay ng Ramon V. Mitra Award for Legislation sa isang engrandeng seremonya sa Manila Hotel na nagbigay parangal sa dose-dosenang alumni ng San Beda. Si Mitra, dating Speaker ng Kamara, ay kapwa alumnus ng naturang Catholic institution.
Lumawak ang kontrobersya hanggang sa loob ng Kongreso. Ayon kay Justice committee vice chairperson Ysabel Maria Zamora, ang remarks ni Suntay ay “inappropriate” at “ironic,” lalo’t naganap ito sa pagdiriwang ng Women’s Month. “Such thoughts do not empower women,” giit ni Zamora.
Ipinanawagan din nina Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante at iba pang miyembro ng komite na tanggalin sa opisyal na record ang “sexist utterance.”
Samantala, mariing kinondena ni Gabriela Women’s Party List Rep. Sarah Elago ang remarks ni Suntay. “There is no place for sexism and objectification of women by public officials,” aniya.
“His remark is unacceptable and he should publicly apologize. Sharing his thoughts about a woman, for whatever reason, is profane and is an objectification of women,” giit ni Elago. (ROSE NOVENARIO)
