ITUTURING na “act of war” ng Pilipinas kapag tinanggal ng China ang BRP Sierra Madre sa Ayungin Shoal sa West Philippine Sea.
Sinabi ito ni Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. sa isang panayam sa US news show na CBS “60 Minutes”.
“If China were to take the Sierra Madre that is a clear act of war on the Philippine vessel. We will react naturally,” ayon kay Teodoro.
Inaasahan aniya ang pagsaklolo ng Amerika sa Pilipinas laban sa mga panggigipit ng China dahil may mga tao sa loob ng warship.
“That is an outpost of Philippine sovereignty so we’re not only talking about a rusty old vessel solely. We are talking about a piece of Philippine territory in there,” giit ni Teodoro.
Isinadsad ng Pilipinas ang BRP Sierra Madre noong 1999 sa Ayungin Shoal bilang simbolo ng soberenya ng bansa.
Nagpahayag ng pagkaalarma ang China sa ulat na tatanggap ng Mid-Range Capability Missile System ang Pilipinas mula sa US at itinuturing itong pag-uudyok sa geopolitical confrontation.
Para kay Teodoro, walang pakialam ang China sa depensa ng Pilipinas at ito’y nangyayari naman sa loob ng teritoryo ng bansa at sumusunod sa international law.
“It is not their business. It is for the Philippine defense. What happens in our territory is for our defense. We follow international law,” ani Teodoro.
Hindi kinompirma at hindi rin itinanggi ng Defense secretary kung may plano ang Pilipinas na magkaroon ng missiles na may kakakayahang maabot ang China.
“I really don’t know the end state. All I know is that we cannot let them get away with what they’re doing,” sabi ni Teodoro. (ZIA LUNA)
